Insects and a snake

Some shot’s from today. The dragonflies, swallowtail, and snake were taken with my Canon 300mm f/4L IS USM plus 1.4X TC, and everything else was taken my Sigma 150mm macro lens plus Kenko tubes.

My first garter snake of the year…



Sorry about the quality of this image, ISO was 1600 and I had to use my on camera flash (still waiting for my 430 EX speedlight, I hate Adorama). There were a bunch of ants collecting the dew from these aphids… I’ve only seen this done on television. Hopefully they will still be there tomorrow and the light will be much better…

Orgnoi1, welcome to the W&N forum, I can't wait to see some of your pics.

Knight, it's been pretty windy here too, I spent most of the day just waiting for a break in the wind to snap the pics... what I'd do for a calm day with good light (lol, can't say on a family forum).

Some more from today... and oh-yeah, I bought the Green Clean like Payn suggested... I'll clean my sensor tomorrow.

Geez Copy Kot, These are just killer shots! You're making me think about delving into the macro world here a bit. It just looks plain cool! Shots 2 and 4 from the first series are my favs, but all are good.

Thank you Bob, your camera body would be perfect for macro's. I would love to be able to use higher ISO speeds without so much visible noise (equals being able to stop down more)... you have me thinking about buying the Mark III (from other topics/posts).

I've been researching the 1D Mark III heavily. I finally have some first-hand info from a source I trust (Art Morris - www.birdsasart.com). He basically says the 1D Mark III Has the same amount of noise at ISO 3200 that my 1Ds Mark II does at ISO 400!!!! That's just surreal. I don't even do NR on my 1Ds Mark II at ISO 400.

Can you imagine what the Canon engineers must be cooking up for the 1Ds Mark III? Probably 20mp, 6fps, and 6400 usable ISO (with 3200 being used like I use 400). Art said the 1D mark III will revolutionize nature photography.
