    Get closer

I moved my set up a bit closer to the BB box this morning, and this is what I came home with.

Mj, this is an outstanding shot. Send it to National Geographic so Loupey will have some competition.

Thanks Frog. I'm still processing some other images from this shoot, but this was my favorite.

Excellent! That's what I was imagining.

I'm sure you'll be able to capture mom and dad coming in with food this way.

    Re: Get closer

Thanks everyone. I went back again this morning, but the light never came, and I didn't feel like sitting there so I only lasted about 90 minutes. I'm a little disappointed with the fisheye lens. I loose too much of the angle of view and distortion with a crop sensor camera. I took my 12-24mm today for a little bit wider view. Nothing worth posting from this mornings shoot, but I'm going to keep trying. I have to see if I have any ISO 400 slide film so I can try this with the fisheye on my film camera to get an even wider view.

Yeah, I had some help. Here you can see my assistant directing the model into position.

Love the colors and the details, though could be a bit brighter. Distortion like that could be fixed, too

Great captures. I tried this once but didn't have the success you show here, very nice indeed. S

Awesome Idea! I love the perspective and the bluebirds don't seem to mind either!

It took them about an hour to come back to the nest once I set up. Once they got use to it, they were OK with it. They would still get a little spooked when the shutter would click, but they got use to that too. When I left for the day, I took the camera off of the tripod, but left the tripod in the same location so that when I went back Sunday morning, it wasn't such a huge adjustment for the birds again. A little risky since this is on public land, but it's off the beaten path and not many people go here anyway. It was only a $30 walmart tripod so not a big loss if someone took it.

The chicks should be hatching pretty soon, so look for more.

    Thanks Alex.

I checked on the BB's tonight. The chicks have hatched! The weather is looking pretty good for the weekend, so don't be surprised if you see a few more pics.

    Re: Get closer

Thanks Mike, Martin & Alison. I ordered some film that should be delivered today. That way I can get a true fisheye effect from my 16mm lens. If the weather holds out tomorrow morning, I'm hoping to get some images with more distortion around the edges.

I'm also trying to figure out a way to mount a reflector to my tripod to help fill in the shadows under the overhang on the nest box. I want to mount my flash as well, but with a max flash sink speed of 1/200 or 1/250 of a second, I think it will be too slow to freeze the action. Still looking forward to playing around with it.
