Here's the data on this on. ISO200, 54mm, f/9.0, 1/13sec, IS-ON. Some of the things I would like to now is how you set your camera up for a shot like this. I only have three focusing points with the 510 so I set it for the middle one and focused on it's head. I also shot for as much DOF as I could to still be hand held.

Because the focus plane needs to be so precisely placed (generally cutting through the eye of the subject) and the DOF is generally so shallow (even for subjects which are far away due to extreme telephoto), I recommend going full MANUAL FOCUS (MF).

Everything that I have ever posted in this forum has been MF. For me, it is the fastest and most accurate way to get what you want. Compose the subject where you want it, manually focus until you see the eyes snap into focus, then release the shutter without recomposing.

It will help you down the road when you have to shoot through sticks/twigs/grass/reeds/etc. which would otherwise foul any AF system.
