Nice attempts. I like the colors and post processing.

#1) you missed your focusing. The plane of focus cuts right between the two flowers and misses what I consider the main subject (the stamens in the foreground flower).

#2) I like the composition but it seems to be a bit too tight as the top of the flower is cut off. You could go tighter or looser - it seems to be in the middle as it is. The DOF is a bit too shallow IMO.

#3) I like the overall softness of the image. But I think there is some camera motion blur as there is no one sharp area. I would crop in just a hair to eliminate the bottom right corner distraction and to improve where the flower is cut-off in the upper right corner.

Flowers are deceivingly difficult to render well. So don't be disappointed. You did well!

Thanks for all the advice loupey, this is really really really helping me a lot since my professor is not into wildlife and nature. Submitting my pictures here helps me sooo much!

since I live in UA I'm thinking of visiting your upper arlington location just to check it out!

Please do! Ask for Diane. That reminds me that I need to take in some new work - thanks for the reminder :)

There is a fantastic Greek resturant right next door.

Keep in mind that, generally, an effective photograph tells a story. Whether it's a complicated story, a clear story, a cultural story, or many different stories depends on the subject and how one portrays it.

But flowers are challenging in that one is generally conveying a feeling more than a story. You have to know what feeling you feel and then try to get the feeling on film.

Of course you could go in real close and shoot "abstract nature" for the cool effect :p I'm currently working on something along those lines (not just with flowers) for a personal project.

For your reference, I would suggest visiting the Franklin Park Conservatory to get a lot of practicing accomplished in a fairly well controlled environment.

You know the flowers at Purdue do look better than those. Well since everything there is better ;) But Kudos to you for giving this a shot, I can't shoot a flower to save my life maybe I need to just get out and give it a shot

Yeah, lots - and depends on what exactly you're looking to shoot. The zoo is also a good place to find natural abstracts and hone the eye to look beyond the norm. Both are terrific places to work on your technical execution.

The local rivers, ponds, lakes are starting to come to life for field macro work. But I'd recommend the above before working with the clouds, wind, and rains.

I'm hoping for a short break after this week (wrapping up about 6 busy months worth of projects - non photo-related) so I too will be hitting the fields soon. PM me if you want to do the conservatory/zoo thing. I can probably swing by for a few hours here and there.
