A Field of Potential
Last weekend I came across this beautiful field of wildflowers in a clearing. I waited at the edge just willing for a subject (any subject) to land/walk/run/popup in it. All that came then was a single butterfly which suffered horribly from the backlighting.

Re: A Field of Potential
Fast forward to this evening: After hiking for 2 hours and seeing/hearing hardly anything, I make it to this same field.
The second image is the very last frame in this series. She was very close and very nervous. I thought she might charge me. She snorted very loudly and ran off to my left. I didn't know it at the time but I had squeezed off another frame and it was of a very blurry ground :p

Re: A Field of Potential
My bet is that there's a fawn hidden in those flowers. Doe deer usually arent that territorial, but they'll fight anything for their babies.

Re: A Field of Potential
most fawns are born early spring, and grown quite tall by now, this doe would have never attacked you, most likely was trying to smell you better by snorting, plus the mating season hasn't yet come up , i wouldn't fear any deer right now, they are more fearful of you.

Re: A Field of Potential
Thanks, guys, for looking.
Canon_Bob - yeah that was what I was thinking. Hence my concern that perhaps I approached too close too fast.
polarbeardiggers - perhaps (I haven't photographed/studied too many deer). But that one snort she did was at the same instance that she bound away. A second before that we had a stare-off not knowing what the other was going to do. I'm sure my eye got real big through the lens :p
Minnesota scroller - thanks! I'm planning on blowing it up real big and putting it in my family room.
Knight - those flowers are already starting to wilt. The peak must have been about a week ago. But I sure won't complain about the shot I got :)
Here's a fawn I got this afternoon from a completely different field. I managed to get off exactly 1 frame as it trotted past this one open spot in the woods. I saw another fawn with this one but did not see the mommy.

That second shot of the doe is fantastic. What a setting!

Thanks for looking and commenting, scott-devon :)

Re: A Field of Potential
Those are all really beautiful...I love that type of flower. I think that last one with all the flowers and the deer almost buried in them is my fave. :)

Emily - thanks for looking :)
Here is an intermediate shot during my approach. While I like the pose and subject size better, I didn't like the greenery behind the head (hence my continued approach to a better position). This shot and the close-up one both at 1/125s, f/5.6, ISO 400, 300mm, handheld. The far shot at 1/180s everything else the same.
While at the other field last night (the one with the fawn), I did spot the two fawns - this time with their mother. No camera = no shots however. Will try to get some shots tonight.
thanks again, everyone.

Re: A Field of Potential
I haven't been able to get back to the field with the fawns. But I did make it back to this field of flowers. Saw a few butterflies. This one stopped for only a brief moment. Not the best positioning of the butterfly. A better pose was captured but the focus was off a hair.
Hope to make it back here from time to time to see if I can get some better pixs.
