Re: Summer 2008 Bird ID Thread.

At first I thought this was a juvie rose-breasted grosbeak (they are in the area again) because it has a little red streak on its breast.

But the beak is too small, there is no distinct stripe over the eye, and the red is also on the neck and extends around to the back.

Re: Fall 2008 Bird ID Thread.

OK, I'm 99.9% sure that this first one is a yellow-bellied sap sucker. Please excuse the quality as I was taking a nap in my hammock this past weekend and this fellow landed above me on one of the trees holding up my hammock.

But I don't know if the 2nd one is a juvie YBSS. Taken a day apart. Yes, I was standing for that one

And, yes, I do sleep with my camera at my side (as long as it is outside and high value targets are in the area)

Three more from this morning. You may have IDed one earlier in the Summer thread.

The first one was cool with that white stripe across its nose.

Re: Fall 2008 Bird ID Thread.

Oh man everything was out in full force this morning! We had heavy, steady rains yesterday so I'm guessing they were out today more so because of it.

At times, we practically had kinglets, warblers, vireos, and at least two yellow-bellied SS raining from the trees. So many "firsts" for me during the past week and a half. The kinglets (golden crowned?) came in large numbers but were mostly in the shade so I got only one halfway decent shot.

golden crowned kinglet, ruby crowned kinglet and yellow rumped warbler. When it rains birds don't move and songbirds are nocturnal migraters. You had a double does of birds that set down to feed after the flight .

So i guess Mike's White crowned sparrow is a young one right and this one is a Adult ? This guy is not native to my area so he must have stopped for a rest & some food he should be 500 miles north or south at this time from me .

Oh crap....... Mike's is a chipping sparrow which is what I thought I typed. I have a double ear infection , sinus infection and a chest cold that is getting better slowly... that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

    Your's is a white crowned

Re: Fall 2008 Bird ID Thread.

I need to get a Sparrow book now, I picked up one on Warblers and I think I'm getting better with their ID's. When I saw you ID that first one as a White-crowned I thought it must be a juvy. Here's one from today.

Re: Fall 2008 Bird ID Thread.

Is this a pine sisken? About the right size, dark breast streaks, touch of yellow on the wings, but not very dark overall.

It seems the entire state is on the look out for the PS - scattered reports trickling in from all over the state. Don't know what exactly makes it so sought after.

But I went soughting after one

That sure is ! Not the best looking bird by far, but a far northern species of finch that only comes to NJ when it rediculously cold up north in Canada.

A couple of birds from yesterday, things are slowing down around here but I found a few that didn't mind posing for a few shots.
