    Dinner

Ok.. so I got the sony a100.. and I'm playing with it a lot, but I am so not satisfied yet. <--meaning with myself lol not the camera! But here is one that I liked. I did use photoshop a little on this pic as the sun washed it out a little bit. There is so much more to using this camera than my old DSC-H1. I admit.. I haven't read the manual yet, but I'll be doing that (I am so bad about manuals lol.. you'd think I was a man! :aureola: )
    I used ISO 800
and everything else was on auto pretty much.

    Doh! OUCH! Zing!

Hope you didn't have to ask for directions along the way either

Nice image - tough one to post process though. Difficult to boost contrast without loosing too much shadow detail under the bird.

Keep on shooting and posting and asking questions

    Re: Dinner

    LOL
Yeah.. I was trying to do more with it than I did, but .. it just wasn't working lol. I am new to photoshop too tho.
Are there settings that would have been better for this shot? I believe I did have it on P or Program Auto Mode on the mode dial. That was the setting I always used on my DSC-H1 and it worked well with that camera.

Oh and of course I didn't have to ask for directions! "I knew exactly where I was going!"

    Re: Dinner

I'm guessing that, if you used P-mode, this shot was originally underexposed? Perhaps when you uploaded the image on your computer, you added more exposure for the darkness?

All automated modes (P, Av, Tv) will be fooled by such backlighting. The only way to control it is to use manual mode. Yes, you could use exposure compensation when using the automated modes, but why bother - it takes more thought than using manual.

Of all the automated modes, Av (aperture priority) is the most useful IMO. Since most nature/wildlife requires control of the DOF and the use of a restricted lens (apertures no faster than f/2.8), it is easier if you set the aperture and let the camera select the shutter.

Of course, setting both aperture and shutter speed is the easiest

Nice image with your new camera Amber. I agree with Loupey about using the Av mode, especially for newbies like me I like using the Av mode because I can use a slower ISO speed and still get half way decent exposure without too much noise.
