Re: a daughters request
That sounds like a great idea. Kearny is a good day's drive from me but I would be up for it. I have always wanted to photograph the cranes on the Platte. It's still too far away to commit, but something I will keep in mind. I will need a reminder as the time draws closer. :)

Re: a daughters request
I just added it to my list of destinations the other day. It's a good 3/4 day drive, but would be so much fun. However, I'm not the type to rent a blind and go with a firm agenda. I prefer to head out and do my own exploring.
BTW Racedraper, have you ever checked this out? http://www.fws.gov/midwest/SquawCreek/ It's not far from you. I've been down there the last 2 years and had a great time. I've gone at the end of Nov. when the snow geese are their by the tens of thousands and the eagles have followed.

Re: a daughters request
According to a book I just finished, the best time to visit for photos would be in April. They hunt these birds in Texas, where they are coming from and by April, they've settled down some and aren't quite as skittish. They also recommend weekdays, due to their being less people around. The cranes are very wary of people and their vehicles.

Anyone still thinking about making a trip to the Platte River to photograph the cranes?
