Blind Bird

I shot this bird with a blind eye from my blind in the back yard this morning. I have a photo of a house finch with an eye just like this from last winter.

I had a few of those last winter also, i don't know if they injure themselves in flight with branches or if its a sickness.

When I first say the title, I thought I would see a photo of a blind bird. Then I figured it must have been shot from a blind. I guess I was right on both counts.


Good photo of a pathetic little bird. Maybe they can see just fine with just one eye. Of course, his peripheral vision would stink, which would make him more prone to predators.

I believe that the is caused by the disease called Mycoplasmal Conjunctivitis. It's very common in house finches, and gold finches. You can learn more about it here if you're interested.

Hey Mike. I used my heater in the blind this morning and it worked great. I don't think the temp got above freezing today, and I was very comfortable in the blind without a jacket on.

Thanks for the link, Mike. It really looks like the disease is spreading rapidly now and across species.

A lot of questions still unanswered about the disease.

I used to deal with this disease a lot with captive finches when I worked for a pet store. With captive birds its a simple matter of tetracycline in the water every day but that would be way too much work for wild birds.

What type of blind do you shoot from ?

I have a Yukon Tracks Dispatcher.

I think I'm going to set it up again tomorrow and see how it goes. I don't think the temp is supposed to get above 0 tomorrow.
