16 The firewood we got was some sort of pine and it burned very hot and fast and popped like crazy. I started taking some long exposures to try and capture the embers.
Needless to say, this fire was NEVER unattended and we kept a close eye on it.

Re: Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Looks like someone had some spectacular views!
Nice captures...beautiful area~
Re: Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
This is one of my favorite places. The best thing about the park is that it gets very few visitors. At least it did several years ago... Nice photos, I enjoyed them.
Did you stay on the Gunnison side (the most common) or did you drive up and around to the far side?
I always think about what the railroad guys must have said when they reached the canyon: Oh xxxxx!!!
Re: Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Thanks :)
We were on the south rim (gunnison). I'd like to get to the north rim someday.
I remember reading somewhere that one of the first expeditions to survey the canyon declared it would be "financial suicide" for the company to attempt a railroad on such rough terrain.
Re: Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Wow, what a place !
Thank you for sharing !!

Re: Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Great shots. I know this is an old thread, but I was hoping to resurrect it.
I had the pleasure of working as a Park Service Interpretive Ranger on the North Rim last year (I joined the Teacher/Ranger/Teacher crew on the S. Rim this year--been in the park now three years running), and I would highly recommend camping on that quieter side if you get a chance. I stayed this year in the S. Rim campground and loved it, but the N. Rim side is just incredible. My supervisor told me that it reminded him of how the Park Service was 30 years ago. You can see a few of my recent shots by heading to my portfolio--just "google" "Greg Aitkenhead Photography." Thanks,
Greg
