    Bighorn Ram

    Zenfolio | Wildlife Photography

This is the season, so we are spending a large amount of time with these guys. This one has a battle scar (broken horn) from his head butting this year. We were lucky enough to witness this as it happened! Amazing animals!

    Re: Bighorn Ram

Must be a combination of skill, location, luck, and plenty of time which results in such a marvelous picture.

When in Canada's Alberta and British Colombia National Parks, I wanted to photograph a male with horns. Instead only ewes appeared with their lambs. Never a ram in sight. So no real horns, either intact or broken. Came off fairly well, my first-ever video and stills of Big Horn Sheep.

Had I been in your position, I wonder if my camcorder could have captured that ram battle. Although deep in highest quality stills territory here, video remains superior when it comes to action sequences. I have at least upgraded to a modest digital still camera, with excellent results.

That's cool to capture a Ram with a broken horn but to watch it happen, now that's something.
