Baby Raccoon Series

While hiking through the wilderness in early April, I came across this young Raccoon near the trail I was on. He was not in the least bit afraid of me, so I lay down prone for a better POV while shooting him. At one point. he actually came up and touched my lens hood with his paw (sure wish someone else had been there to capture that). Anyway, his mother eventually came back out of the jungle to get him, and they actually posed and played a bit before they left. A very wonderful experience, and glad I was able to capture it.

Oh Canon Bob these are just superb, the shots have great focus and composition, just to get a look at these guys in the wild would be a dream for me let alone get a series of photos like this.
They are all terrific but the last 3#'s are wonderful.

Ya, Its so nice when you have a "moment" with nature. Most people dont take the time to just sit, listen and look(and shoot if you have a camera). Its nice to see that your patience paid off!:thumbsup: Great shots!!

Bev - If you want to see these guys sit on my front porch at dusk one night and watch the parade across the street from the neighbors house to my backyard fence. There's a family of about 10 of them but they always come out too late in the day for me to get a usuable shot. Of course you'd also have a bit of a swim ahead of you to get form home to here..... but I'd meet you in Newfoundland with a towel and a thermos of Coffee =P.

Jaedon thanks for the offer but with my camera bag on my back id sink like a lead weight! or i would have to swim with one arm in the air clutching my camera in fear of it drowning, but that would leave me going round in circles! lol. what a sight for sore eyes. No, il just have to keep drawling over the pictures you guys keep posting of all these wonderful creatures we dont get here!

Nah that happens in the fall when the salmon are running. Right now the raccoons are scaring all the bears away by luring photographers into dark corners of the woods and stealing the camera equipment. What Bob failed to mention is that he is lost in the woods and the raccoons did the actual posting of the pictures =)

Strange... the only wild mammal that I seem to attract are skunks. Go figure :p (watch it you guys :) )

Thanks for the compliment! Believe it or not, I've only been a wildlife photographer for about 9 months. I converted to digital last year after from the Canon F-1 and A-1 cameras (no auto focus). I do have a lot of experience as a photographer, but wildlife is still a new genre to me, and I'm very much a newbie in that area.

I'm curious - what is/was your main photographic subject?

Love the A-1! I had two of those along with a boat load of FD glass. When my son was born, I figured my N/W days were over and I traded them all in for rangefinders (Contax G-1 for the wife, G-2 for me). Then went all digital myself about 2 years ago when I saw that digital image quality surpassed film at a reasonable cost.

My photographic subject matter has varied over the years. I started out with an old Kodak Retina Reflex III as a teenager, and shot mostly landscapes. Later, I became interested in cityscapes, night photography, and special effects work.

Now, here I am 25 years later, living in Florida and shooting primarily wildlife. I shoot Real Estate on the side for extra cash, but there's no real skill involved there. Pays OK, though. Wildlife and landscapes are my current interests, with heavy emphasis on avian photography.

BTW - I still have my A-1 and two F-1 bodies, and a ton of glass. I'm too attached to them to let them go! I don't shoot them anymore, though. I bought my 1DsMII in August, and just went over 13000 shots with it. I also have a XTi as a backup.

I have a few pieces (not Canon stuff though) that I couldn't part with either. They don't make equipment like they used to. Nothing like having a totally manual piece of equipment designed and manufactured to last a lifetime.

LOL - I think everyone should own at least one manual camera. There is no better way to learn the basic photographic fundamentals than having to set them all yourself. :thumbsup:

And you're sure right about those old "built to last" rigs. I've had my A-1 since 1981, and picked up the two F-1's off eBay once eveyone but me was converting to digital. I still have my Kodak Retina Reflex III!
