Re: Baby owl
Latest info I got says that the owls were born two months ago. On May 4 when I was there, the owls, all three of them, were no longer in the nest. Later found them on two different trees. It looks like they're getting farther and farther away from the nest.
I'm not sure if this one is the same one that I posted previously.

I wonder if the owls could actually hear the sound from the shutter even when they're more than 20 ft above the ground. It looks like if you point your camera at them, sooner or later they will be looking right at you.

Here's another one. This one was way up on another tree. One of the parents was close by.

Re: Baby owl
I can't believe they can fly yet..wow if they can!
An owl can hear a silent fart from 200 feet in the wind. Seriously, they can hear a mouse in the grass in the wind and see way better.

May be they just hop from one branch to another and so from tree to tree. They're away from the nest all right, but it's still like within two blocks from it.

No wonder.

Oh, so that's why I can't find them!

Re: Baby owl
Nice set of photo's.
I can hear an owl in the distance at night but can't find it no matter how hard I look.

May 11: Found two of the young owls sitting together. One of the parents was just a few feet away by the tree trunk. The other young fellow was by itself on another tree.

Once again, my observation that "you just have to start pressing the shutter release and they'll look back at you" proved to be true. Here's another observation: "after a while, they'll lose interest and look somewhere else."

Re: Baby owl
May 18. I almost had to point my camera straight up to get this photo. Given the area there, it is really difficult to get a clear shot of the owls. The only good thing is the young owls always respond to the camera...at least in my case. The parent owls? You may as well talk to the cats.
I guess it was trying to sleep...

Re: Baby owl
That last one looks like the little fella doesn't know how to perch yet!
Excellent series. Please keep them coming.

Every time I saw them, they were farther and farther away from the nest where they were born. Somehow it doesn't look as round as before like a furry ball, the body seems longer. So I guess they're taller now :)

Re: Baby owl
Well, I heard today people still saw two owls there. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate them again. Things seem to have quieted down in the sanctuary.

Jul 20: Found the owls!
The manager of the sanctuary was leading a guided tour with a small group of folks. I happened to be around practicing shooting flying swallows...with not much success...again :cryin: Then the group stopped a few feet behind me, and I heard the manager said: "There's the great horned owl." The owls were yards away behind me.
One of them could be one of the parents. Don't know. May be you can tell me.

I'm pretty sure this is the young one. It was about a foot or so above the water.

The lighting condition was far from ideal. They were back-lit to begin with. The one on the tree was obviously in the shadows. Tried to fix them..I think the second one turns out pretty OK :D So, not awarding winning photos for sure; just some birding shots.
Yup, they saw me.
And yes, the young ones have been flying around for a while now.

Jul 25: Missed the flight.
After a few shots and while talking with some birders, the young owl took off. Missed the flying shot big time :cryin:
