lens queery

i have a Nikon D60 with 2 lenses ( 18mm-55mm AF S VR and a 55mm-200mmAF S VR) and am ready to expand. i've been reading the reviews on Sigma lenses such as 135mm-400mm zoom,and have gotten mixed reviews. question does the quality of the photos you get from the lens also depend on the quality of your camera. some people were not crazy about the lens but they were useing a higher quality camera than mine.

let me rephrase the question why would some people get better results from the same lens than others?

Hope you aren't expecting any clear answers from me and mostly I'm looking forward to the answers you get from others.
The lens is the primary difference in quality of photo but the camera can make some difference. Some have better high iso quality, better focusing, etc.
As far as why some get better results with the same lens, there are a zillion answers, but mostly it comes down to knowing your equipment and its good and bad points, post processing skills, and the knowledge to get the best of whatever you're shooting.
Practice and knowledge.
I also think it matters if you know ahead of time what you want in an image. Then you can use different settings until you get that effect.
I don't have high end lenses nor the fanciest camera but have had some good results along with a lot of not so good.
I'm curious as to what others will say.

I agree with what Frog said. Your lens will make the biggest difference in you photo quality. I will always buy a lesser body and better glass if given the choice. The body makes a difference in convenience and ergonomics, better low light performance, faster handling, etc.

Two things not yet addressed here:

Sigma is well known for having "good" samples and "bad" samples - the exact same lens, WAY different quality. I don't own any sigmas so I can't comment personally but the idea of a good sigma and a bad sigma are pretty common terms thrown around the interweb.

Also, the skill of the photographer greatly influences the quality of the shot. With long telephotos like 400mm, the skill of the photographer is probably the single most important part of getting a clear, shake free shot. Handholding a 400mm lens is no joke. It's pretty straight forward why one person would love a 400 and another person would hate it, even if they were both the greatest lenses on the planet.
