Re: What if you lost your digital images?
I has happened to me, and believe me the feeling is not good. I used to format my SD card after i have copied them onto my laptop, and unfortunately my system crashed. As I'm not a tech savvy person I took to an expert to see if he could recover my data, My bad luck, all what i had in the system had gone. Since then I made sure to have multiple backups. In the form of DVDs, External hard drives, cloud storage etc. This way So, now if I loose my photos at one place, I can be rest assured that they are safe at another.

Re: What if you lost your digital images?
Yes +1 for RescuePro. Just used it to recover 3GB of bad data for a customer. Worked well. As stated below not 100% however we ended up getting about 85% of the corrupted data. Customer was very happy. :-)

Re: What if you lost your digital images?
If this nightmare(ish) thing ever happen to me, I would cry for two day at least coz I've around 8000+ photos stored on my PC. Secondly, I'll look for way to backup my digital memories.
I think I should start backing up my photos NOW. before anything like this occur.

Re: What if you lost your digital images?
Backing up is not just for truck drivers.
Your backups should be in multiple formats as well as more than once place. There's no excuse except for being an idiot these days because disks are so inexpensive and for some scenarios cloud storage can be free.
Do take this consideration. A cold backup - one that's not live or available on a same network - is very important. This is because a virus such as CrytoLocker or a compromised computer can get your online backup or copies.
Amazon Glacier storage with software like Cloudberry (Windows) or Arq (Mac) is a great way to moderate costs and have TNO privacy. TNO is "trust no one".

Re: What if you lost your digital images?
One and two TB portable USB drives are pretty inexpensive. I bought two 1 TB WD My Passport drives in August for our 3-week road trip. Those two drives will become my '2014' back up drives. There is a pair for each year.
All my cards have numbers, indelible ink on the card. This is all complicated by the multiple cameras, requiring both CF and SD cards. The cameras are also numbered. I take notes on location, camera used, ETC.
After transferring files to my main computer, I back file up to two drives, one stays here at my home, the other goes to my daughter's house. The drives get exchanged at least once a week.
Then there is 'Cloud', though my entire digital collection is not uploaded yet, it is working on it.
The major worry is getting home and transferring files after shooting. I have two memory card cases, one marked 'Used', the other marked 'Empty'. As a card approaches 75% of it's capacity, it goes in the 'Used' case. One card then comes out of the 'new' case and into the camera. If I am on a overnight trip, I read the files into a computer, and on a USB hard drive.
Condensing to a set of RULES:
Number your cards, make notes
Don't mix Empty formatted cards with Used cards
Change cards between 50 and 75%
Transfer files ASAP
Do not erase or format cards until data is transferred to at least two drives
I have not lost a digital file since 2008, when I started using this system.

Re: What if you lost your digital images?
that is a problem analog photography did not seem to have. most people seem to take much better care of negatives than sd cards.

Three-layer strategy.
1) on the day, transfer images to Phototainer
--- confirm they got there by checkin 1st and last image numbers on each backup
2) at home, transfer to the PC
---- confirm that the files are all copied
3) convert RAW files to JPEG
--- make adjustments as necessary
4) resize JPEG to 640x480
5) transfer all from PC to DVD
6) copy from PC to external USB portable HD
7) when the 200G drive fills up, erase files from PC
8) when the external USB 200G drive fills up, buy a new one
So I have many copies.
Phototainer (emergency backup) - of only 40G
DVD backup (used to use CD)
External HD archive (one disk per year)
Internal HD working copy
I think that's enough :D
Though I may turn to making extra backup DVDs of the RAW files.
Tips?
1) Keep up to date.
Your images are only as good as your software and hardware !
Camera firmware
CD/DVD drive firmware
Computer operating system
CD/DVD burning software
2) QUALITY
Don't buy cheap media and expect your images to last forever.
On the other hand, I lost 3 Memorex CDs burned on the same day as a Kodak CD
I've had 3 of 10 DVD-9 from Verbatim fail to burn (no idea if the data will last)
Big brand names on the media may not help
3) Watch out for static
Dry, dusty conditions especially - memory cards are vulnerable
4) Watch the little light
Your camera probably has a light to tell you when the card is in use.
Don't switch it off, or remove the card, while the light is on.
5) Eject the media
Your PC or Mac should have a way to eject the memory card
Use it to make sure all data is flushed before removing it
6) Don't delete.
Buy more memory cards if necessary.
You will, one day, delete that really good image instead of the duff one next to it.
7) Don't keep duff media
You could use it by mistake !
My !G and 340M Microdrives are now very small doorstops.
My 512K card is almost history, it doesn't work in the 20D.
I have so far been bitten by 1, 2, 6, and 7
This worked for me

Re: What if you lost your digital images?
My RAW pics are backed up on my local machine to another drive, on a separate external harddrive and then to 2 different cloud accounts (nightly). So I should be good.

Re: What if you lost your digital images?
First of all we all can save ourselves from this nightmare if we keep a backup in at least 3-4 places.
- Free Cloud Services( drive, dropbox etc)
- Paid Cloud Services
- External Hard drives
- Other External medias (SD cards, USB drive etc)
Also there are certain third party recovery software. These Software use the technology to scan your device for lost photos, preview them and recovers them at your desired and specified location.

Re: What if you lost your digital images?
I don't think that there is a 100% fail system, except having 20 backups in hard drives and 10 cloud backups. I think using a mix of them is the best.
