    Monopods

I finally got one and have been trying to use it a bit... but really, I have no idea what kind of techniques you're supposed to use. I'm just standing it straight down. Are there different ways and techniques to use one?

you can hold it standing straight, it can go between your legs or with the use of your legs be positioned like a tripod (the monopod is your third leg), it can be tilted forward or backward. whatever way helps you hold the camera steady. or use it as a walking stick or to beat off a mugger.

just search how to use a monopod, lots of articles and suggestions will come up.

    Re: Monopods

NaturalWoman gave a great answer, straight up, angled either up or down and even another object.

Are you using a head on the mono-pod, which one?

I like to take mine when I go walking around Chicago for the day, uses the least amount of space and light weight. Plus after a few hours of walking and taking pictures getting that steady shot starts to pose a problem. When I go I meet a buddy for lunch but I'm out there for 8 hours some times, taking pictures, people watching and just enjoying the weather.

    Re: Monopods

    Thanks everyone.

James, I'm using the ball head that came with my Slik tripod. It's not a great one, I'm already thinking I need one that's a little higher rated.

I've found it also makes a good ground tester when walking on a boggy grass trail to find out if I'm about to sink ankle deep in mud

    Re: Monopods

    Cara,

That sounds like a good ideal, better the mono-pod then you.

Yea I also have a ball head that I use on both my tri-pod and mono-pod. I've been thinking about getting a pan/tilt for just the mono-pod. I have a feeling that I will forget the head on the other one that I don't have with me and be out of luck.
