Want to learn how to make custom frames
I want to learn how to make my own frames and cut my own matts. I have asked in google but don't seem to be having much luck. Do any of you know of a good book or DVD that can get me started on frames or matts? Is there any suggestions on a matt cutter to look at? I have a 1000sq ft woodshop in my yard that is fairly well equiped so I have the room to set up an area to do this but need to find out what is needed and how to build the frames, Jeff

G'day.
This might be useful ... http://www.photokaboom.com/photograp...ng.htm#Framing
I'm finishing the restoration of a yacht a Magic 25. I'll be finished in a week. If you don't get a better reply than this, I'll write you a mini treatise on making frames and cutting mats.
If you look deeply into both C&H and Archival's sites there could be useful information on both. There is a shame that there is so much commercial crap to wade through before you find what you are after.
The Smithsonian produced papers on these very same things at one stage. They could have stuff on the web, but they are concerned with the definitive conservation standards for doing this and this is useful background to have.
There are real benefits to cutting your own frames not just cutting up pre made mouldings. The main one is being able to use fine furniture timbers from your local region. You could ask for a list of available timbers from a fine furinture timber supplier, so you know what is available.
I'm sorry the yacht is taking almost every moment otherwise there is nothing that I would enjoy more than writing a here's-how.

Re: Want to learn how to make custom frames
I don't know much about making frames, but took a workshop once about cutting mats. A decent mat cutter is needed, but not necessarily a professional grade ($$$) monster. It was actually pretty straightforward, but I found the math part a bit tricky - you have to work from the centre and plan your cuts down to the nth to get it right. I just don't do math
Have you tried YouTube? There are some pretty good tutorials in there on just about anything.
HTH,

Warrren, thanks for the address, I'm checking it out, Jeff
Cath, youtube was the first placed I looked but didn't find anything. I was really surprised that I came up blank, Jeff
