Vignette bottom of picture only

I am shooting film on a maxxum 7 with a minolta 24-105 xi lens and a Tamron 28 - 200. Film is at 200 iso.

When I shoot tword the wider end of the lenses I get a vignette only on the bottom of the photo. http://emooreart.com/myspace/94090001sm.jpg

I tried gaffers tape along the edges of the film door thinking light was getting in and removing all lens filters and hoods. No luck

Both lenses work fine on my Sony a100

Any help would be appreciated

That's weird. It almost looks like a shutter sinc problem. Sorry, can't help you.

Most 35mm focal plane shutters move across the photo not vertically.

Eric, are you using a lens hood? which could of been installed incorrectly, crooked?

To me that seems the mirror is blocking the light as the image on the film is upside down, ground on top sky on bottom, with left and right revised.

I removed all lens filters and the hood. That was my first thought.

Just did another test with my 50mm prime lens and didn't have a problem. Film didn't have a shadow

Good point. Unless, he was laying down when he took the picture. :aureola: It just reminds me of what can happen if your 35mm has a flash sync speed of 1/60/sec. and you shoot at 1/125/sec.

All my lenses except the 50mm get the shadow. none of the lenses have filters or hoods. I did't use a flash so flash sync shouldn't be an issue. very weird

My old Zenit-E had a cloth focal plane shutter going from side to side and a maximum 1/500 shutter speed.
Higher shutter speed comes from metal blades, and then from vertical shutter.
Faster shutters are vertical plane and metal or composite blades, because you can move the shutter across the 24mm height of the frame faster than across the 36 mm width.

I agree that it seems to be the mirror sticking. The max 7 has vertical shutter.
Whatever it is it needs service.

Maybe it's related to the lens-to-film distance ?
If the rear element of the lens is too close to the film, it may just clip the mirror and slow it down on its way up, leaving the shadow.

Remember, most wide angle lenses have what is called RetoFocusing. To get the lens out of the way of the mirror. So the light path is different than a 50mm prime. I just wish I had a graphic to post comparing the light paths.

Took the camera to the shop. The problem was the auto focus mechanism
