Fuzziness with Canon 28-135 IS lens

    Hi all,

I got a Rebel XT and a Canon 28-135mm IS lens for xmas, and love them both very dearly. I have noticed, however, some sharpness issues on some of my pictures. I havent done any difinitive tests yet, but here are the things i have noticed: When im shooting at 28mm (of course thats larger since im using it with a digicam), the center of the picture is perfectly in focus, but the edges of the picture (i always seem to notice it on the left edge particularly) are somewhat fuzzy. I generally notice it when im taking landscape pictures where the subject(s) is at least 50 ft away. I seem to get the same results with or without the IS on. However, I notice it less when I am zoomed in farther.

    here is an example pic:

On this picture I was shooting through glass, so that could also be a contributor to the fuzziness in the upper left corner of this pic, however I was shooting perpendicular to the glass so i was suprised to find only the left side fuzzy.

So, any ideas on why this is happing/what i can do to fix it?

    Thanks

I doubt that the glass is the problem - the whole thing should be a little soft, not just the left. I'd say to contact Canon, they should probably take a look at it, or start with the dealer if you bought it locally. Do you have any other lenses to try out? It's probably just this lens. Before you do all of this, take some other shots that aren't through a window just to rule out that possibility.

I just tried it out with my old 28-80 canon kit lens, and that lens seemes nice and sharp compared to this one in the test shot i did. I just emailed canon support tonight, so ill wait to see what they say.

    Thank You

    jk051,

If you are using an IS lens on a tripod for vista shots, portraiture etc, then turn the IS off. Only use the IS in low light and where subject is moving and you are hand holding, it is advised in the canon book to turn the IS off when mounted on a tripod.

I have this lens and have always found it sharp at all edges and all lengths. Possible you need to have it checked with the camera by Canon as Anotherview mentioned.
