I would get an error if I left on my Olympus C-3030. The lenses which motor out if bumped can jam. If you cann't get it to fee up it just may have to back to Nikon to be repaired. It just may not be covered under waranty, you will have to check.

    Re: Lense Error ??

When Nikon first introduced the 5000 (predecessor of the 5400), they had a big problem with people turning the camera on with the lens cap still on. It would jam the motor and shut the camera down, and you would have to send it in to be fixed. They had a firmware update to fix that right away, and now (I've got a 5000) it will turn on, but you'll get an error. Shut the camera off, take the lens cap off and turn it back on and it's fine.

If this isn't what the problem is, then you might need to send it in. Something doesn't sound right about the LCD screen seeming out of focus though - the error I mentioned happens before you get an image on the LCD.
