Using Canon 28-90 lens - need lens with more zoom.
I am a relative beginner and am currently using the 28-90 lens that I originally bought with our Canon Elan 7e a few years ago. We love this lens for taking photos of our daughter, but I would like something that has a bit more zoom. Possibly 200-300mm. We are on a tight budget, but I also want a good quality lens. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Look at the Canon 28-135 IS lens.

    hold on a second.
What do you want the 300mm for?

    Two thoughts
You might think about the Canon 75-300 IS lens. It's about $350.

You might also consider getting a Canon 50mm/1.8 which is about $65 - and an excellent lens. You can take pictures in low light with this 1.8 aperture and get sharp results. It has an excellent reputation. Also - you can much closer to the subject with this lens. It's a great all around lens that is very light weight. It's good to have around!

Check the review section here for other ideas.

I don't necessarily want to go all the way out to 300mm, I just need a little more zoom. I find that 90mm is not quite enough when I am a little further out. One of my favorite events here in Anchorage every year is the Air Force airshow and I can't zoom in quite close enough to the planes with 90mm. I would also like to close in the frame on our daughter in action when she is playing a little further away. I hope this helps narrow down my needs.

From the sounds of things 200mm might be enough for you. Personally (I know Peter has differing opinions) I would select from any of the 75-300mm lenses and would make sure to get the one with the USM motor. It doesn't make a huge difference with this lens but I always felt like it focused better and quicker. Here's what I'd pick from:

This is the one I recommend:

BTW, Peter's suggestion might also be enough reach for you but it's hard to tell. I'm a little confused why Liz recommended the 50mm. Maybe it was in case you did closup photos.

 You guessed it! I recommended it in addition to a longer zoom as the 50mm/f1.8 is such an excellent lens for the price for just about anything (close).
    I also recommended the 75-300 IS. ;)

the thing about 50 these days is that
I'm getting more and more used to 35, so that 50 is almost like a telephoto
