Stabilisation

When I used my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 on a tripod Panasonic recommended that I disable the image stabilisation as the camera could try to find shake where there was none and this could effect the photograph. I now have the EOS 550d. Does the switching off of the image stabilisation also apply to my Canon lenses when I use my tripod.

Yes. Exactly the same principle. Turn off stabilisation when the camera is on a tripod

From what I understand it applies to all cameras/lenses.
I know it applies to my 19-200 vr lens

Once again I am endebted to you. I suspected the IS was switched off when using the tripod but I could find nothing in my books. Now I know. Thank you.

Just as a reminder..... Don't forget to turn the VR back on when you take your camera off the tripod. I try and make it a habit to check ALL settings each time before I start shooting. White balance, ISO, EV compensation, VR settings, meter settings, and RAW JPEG settings are some of the ones I check. Nothing like taking a bunch of pictures, only to notice that the settings haven't been reset from the last photo outing, Jeff

I'm sure it doesn't matter if it's on or off once your shutter speed is faster than 1/100 or so. Certainly I've never seen a shot ruined by stabilization on a tripod, although I don't use a tripod often...my personal opinion is that it's an overblown fear. But the manufacturer does recommend it, usually.

Actually I thought Canon IS lenses had "tripod detection" in the newer models. Bottom line is to read the manual and see what it says there. Tripod use should be covered.
