prints from 35mm film, cropped

Hello, and Happy Holidays All!

I have a nice digital camera, (Canon 20D) and all lots of nice stuff that works with it.

I like the camera, quite a bit.

I have Photoshop CS, but I'm just not into all that sophisticated digital editing. I like to mostly just use my camera, and do minimal adjustment.

But this is a basically a film question. I still use my older film gear, (especially my Canon A2). Mostly I've been using it for black and white. Which all works out fine. In going through some film prints from this past year, I have found some that would look great if I croped them. My question is, How big a decent enlargement can I make from a cropped 35mm negative? I usually use 200 or 400 ISO film.

Hi and welcome. I guess it really depends on how much the image is cropped, but I've printed full frame up to 16x20 once (well, 16x24 would really be full frame) on 35mm. I used a really sharp lens, fine grained film, a great lab, a tripod and all that other stuff. The quality was pretty good but I'm sure you'll be happier with your 20D shots at that size. My 16x24's from 6mp Fuji S2 blow 35mm away in terms of sharpness and detail. I do a fair amount of post processing and a big part of this is carefully sharpening the image, especially when it's this size.

From ISO 200 & 400 film I would not go above 11x14 prints.
