Photos lock up after I save them

I've tried and tried, but can't figure this one out.

I take photos with my Nikon D50. I copy them to a hard drive. I pull them up in Adobe Photoshop. I save them as whatever (jpg). When I try to pull the photo up again, it tells me that the photo is 'locked' and can't be accessed. Mind you - I can still pull up the original. These locked photos can't even be deleted! No previews in Explorer, and I can't change any properties through Explorer (the photo is 'locked' - remember? :confused: )

Also - I tried sending an original as an attachment to an email and it can't be viewed. And I can't insert them into an email (originals) either.

I've checked the camera settings, and they weren't locked (I don't think so anyway - I've since deleted them from the card!)

Any ideas?

Have you closed out PS? Have you rebooted your system?
Sounds like a hung process still have the images locked as in use (being edited).

A reboot should fix it or use task manager to hunt for the hung process and kill it. Easier to do a reboot tho.

Yes. And the same thing happened with some photos a few weeks ago, and those are still locked.

I agree - it really does produce that same message as when something hasn't properly closed and is in use somewhere else.

I'm thinking more and more that it's a PS problem and that I may need to reinstall. Funny how it only happens with the photos from my camera (and 1 person who sent me photos) though.

Well then it's not just your camera.

I use the Microsoft Raw Image Viewer and Thumbnailer - a good quick tool for looking at folders of images. But it has a bug (feature) that while it's creating the thumbnail for an image, or for a folder, the image or folder is locked.

Have you got Photoshop set to automatically scan folders?
Have you got it set to watch folders for changes even when the program is closed?

When you saved the image as a jpg in PS, did you do "Save As..." or "Save for Web"?

Sometimes using "Save As..." can create an unreadable JPG (Still not sure why, but it's happened to me before) Then what happens is Windows tries to make a thumbnail out of it to display in the folder and can't so it hangs up with the file locked.

Simple solution: change the folder view to "list" to make windows stop trying to make a thumbnail and it should drop the lock.

I still don't know what the deal is with PS making unreadable JPGs though, I've been too lazy to look into it.

I always use "Save As". Maybe I'll start using "Save for Web".

I changed the view to "list" and was able to delete corrupted files, but still can't view them.

Maybe I need a different version (newer) of PS?

I have CS2 and just tried using Save As for a JPG, and it worked. So maybe it's been fixed with CS2.

I've used PS since version 4.0, somewhere between 4.0 and CS2 I ran into the Save As trouble and started using Save for Web instead. Haven't tried Save As in a long long time. :)

As far as the images that you can't read that you want to keep. PS SHOULD be able to open them, then you can just use Save for Web to make the readable again by Windows.

Nope - PS won't open any of the 'locked' files.

I just tried opening a file and used 'save for web' and things are fine with that file. Then I tried 'save as' and it locked up. Definitely a PS problem with 'save as'. Now I just have to get used to 'save for web'.

I have now uninstalled and reinstalled PS 6.0 and the problem still exists. If I were to buy PS CS - where is the best (reliable and good price) place to do so? Online? Best Buy or other big box store? Wal Mart?

Have you tried resetting your preferences?

Hold down the following while starting up the program:
Mac: Shift-Option-Command
Windows: Shift-Alt-Control
