Photography School

Ok so im thinking about going to school but im not to sure which 1 it would have to preferably digital and it doesnt matter where in the world, i have looked at vanarts but im not sure if i want to go there i was thinking some where in the uk or anywhere else

There are plenty of photography courses around the world. Both classroom based and online. It all depends on what you want to know. Some courses are purely technical and others are more artistic and yet others are more concerned with the business of photography. only you can work out what sort of course is best for you. I suggest finding out what courses are offered through your local community college. This will give you a kickstart if you decide to go into a more formal course and still teach you a lot without spending too much money on it. From there you will have a better understanding of what areas of photography interest you. I don't actually know of anyone who has studied photography through one of the online providers. In Australia to study photography you can either do it through a technical college or a university. both have their own merits and one wouldn't be better than the other. The technical college route (tafe) offers solid training in all aspects of photography. The university courses tend to be art based and will offer training in the theory of photography and art.... this doesn't mean you can't learn techniques at uni or art at tafe, just that the courses are designed differently. I hope that hasn't confused you totally.

Start at a local JC. You can learn some great basic photography in those Photo 101 courses. Then, if you really want to take the plunge, look at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara.

But you can also learn a TON from user groups like on flickr. Post your stuff and solicit feedback.

Why would you want to go to the UK, when there are plenty of Photography Schools in Canada and BC (and Canada and the US). I would agree with James - go to a local JC or Technical school and see what they have to offer. You can probably get most of what you want there.

I currently study at a local community college (Santa Monica college). Like some said here, I’m sure there are allot of these types of colleges with photography courses in your area. I took photo 1 which is basically beginning photography. They teach you things like shutter speed lenses and all that basic stuff.
Than I took photo 2 which was B and W photography. Where we got to process and print our own photos from black and white film. After that I took photo 3 which is commercial photography with 4x5. Even though commercial photography in my school was only film based, It has made me a much better digital photographer. I believe that you should get the technical stuff down first and out of the way, so you can do what you want with it. Currently im in beggining photo journalism.

These community college photography classes are usually very cheap, but the equipment and supplies you need to buy that go along with it are usually rather expensive…

As both my children have taken photography classes, one film the other digital. My son took the digital class last spring term and the instructor told the class that their cameras had to have manual exposure mode to use in the class. The film class also required manual cameras, both of my children used my lenses. Unluckily most of the film lenses will not meter with the D70 and I can't afford the upgrade.............
