Ok, so how do you get rid of those jagged edges?

What's the best way to get rid of jagged edges in photos...you know what I mean.....instead of a curve or straight line, you get those pesky jagged edges.

If you are talking about the lines like power lines on a bright sky or similiar, the biggest culprit is resizing JPG images. Best thing you can do is work in TIFF or PSD and do a resize in that format then save as JPG as the last thing. If you work in JPG mode from the start and open/close the image several times you will keep losing image quality.

Even then you may still see some artification/rasterization creep into your photo with JPG compression.

Post an example. Any aliasing should be reduced by the AA filter in your camera, but if your final images show aliasing then it might be oversharpening or other factors. Show us what exactly it is.

yeah, I have noticed that you have these edges on a lot of your photos. Can you post a workthrough for your images?

    John,

Just noticed you shoot with a D70. That thing has a notoriously weak AA filter, increasing aliasing and moire, in exchange for sharper pictures. Much ranting was done about this after the camera's release. What it comes down to is that sharpening can really exaggerate the effect. What I would do is either slightly blur the affected area before sharpening, or sharpen and then use the history brush to paint in previous unsharpened portions into problem areas.

    Ok.....took this one this morning

Shot in jpeg fine.....downloaded to computer.....opened in MS Dig Image Pro 9.
Made adjustments, sharpened, and resized for the web. The image came out of the camera with jagged lines.

You say they are there straight out of the camera. Can you turn down in-camera sharpening?

Just turned it off....I'll go out in a bit to see if that makes a difference. Thanks Sebastian.

I just downloaded IrfanView a while ago and tried a couple of images to see what would happen. If this works, I may just stay with IrfanView. The top shot is resampled in IrfanView, the bottom is what I normally get with MS DIP 9:

    Hey John,
If you shoot in RAW, it will be easier to work with the image and avoid those jagged edges. Everybody else's advice here is good, and I follow it (like not having the camera sharpen -- if you shoot jpeg.).

    Cheers,

    John,

Download the GIMP, it will give you 90% of Photoshop's capabilities for free. Irfanview is nice and I would still use it for quick viewing, but give GIMP a try.

Thanks Tim. I don't have the IrfanView Raw Converter figured out (I think there is one, isn't there?) I did turn off the 'in camera sharpening' last night.
