    Nikon D100 Conversion to Infrared

    Hi folks,

Since I bought my D200, my D100 has been collecting dust. A couple days ago, I stumbled across some infrared photos taken with a D100 that had been modified to shoot ONLY in the IR spectrum.

Does anyone here know of a reputable company that will make the conversion to my camera??

    Hey Brian,

Good to see you posting again.

I heard Vincent Versace(sp) talking about this on a podcast a while back. He had a company called Life Pixel modify his camera. They have a couple different options.

Re: Nikon D100 Conversion to Infrared

I just picked up the November 2007 issue of Outdoor Photographer (I'm a little behind on my reading) and Bob Krist has an article about this very subject. He sent his camera (D70) to Life Pixel for the conversion. The article also lists a company called LDP LLC as a place to have the conversion done.

I must admit, I have thought about having this done to my DRebel once I upgrade. I'll have to wait and see how much it gets used after the upgrade before I make that choice though.

    Hi MJ,

Life Pixel is the company I came up with as well, but thought I'd look for some personal references before trusting my gear with a company I found on the internet.. Know what I mean?

Thanks for taking the time to offer up a halpful suggestion. It's looking like Life Pixel is legit and will be doing some work on my D100.

A friend of mine recently bought a D70 and had it converted to IR. He's pretty excited about it, I'll find out who did it.

You have to watch out, you can make clothing disappear with IR cameras, and can get you in hot water, and maybe jail. With IR film it was not a problem due to the long exposure times.

If the whole clothes disappearing thing is true, it will be well worth the cost of the conversion! ;)

Re: Nikon D100 Conversion to Infrared

A few (maybe five) years ago, there was a video camera that had a mode that would supposedly do this. It's not quite as graphic as what you're thinking (hoping?!) but still has the potential to cause some trouble. I haven't heard this about DSLR's converted to IR - anyone have any experience with this?

Remember, this is a family show - especially if you're posting any images...

    D100 Conversion Update

Well, I was talking with my Dad this morning and we got on the topic of digital cameras.. He's been on a digital P&S kick for the past couple years, leaving his F100 sitting and collecting dust.. Today he mentions that he's interested in purchasing a DSLR. Being the kind and loving son that I am, I suggest that he should just take my D100 instead of buying a new camera.

He has done so much for me in my lifetime, it's the least I could do.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I always appreciate people going the extra mile to help me out.

Well it was a tall tail, short of. Yes depending on what the clothing is made of you can see though the clothing, the clothing acts like a diffuser filter, some more than others form the web paper I viewed. Remember this was a real time video camera, but the same results can be had in still cameras, you just have to find a technician to do the conversion.
