    Is my battery ruined/destroyed?

    Canon Li-ion battery for 350XT

Instructions suggest not to leave it overnight. Well, I did. For about 36 hrs. as I forgot I plugged it in to the charger.

I want to use it for the weekend. Anyone know if I should get another one? Or should it be okay? My experience says that sometimes info isn't always accurate.

    Thanks!

I accidentally did that with the battery for my 20D once and had no problem with it after. I only left it overnight and not 38 hrs. Most of the time that only reduces battery life. It may not last as long now and may run down after fewer shots then before.

My experience - no real harm done.

Should be OK - I think most chargers have an auto shut-off that kicks in when the charging is complete. I've left my batteries on chargers overnight (or longer if I forget...) and never had a problem. It's probably just a legal-ese liability thing in case the one in a million happens and there's an electrical problem with the charger.

    Talking thanks Dan and Steve.....

That's good news. At least I know it won't die on me after a few shots! I appreciate the information from your experience. I usually plug it in where I can see it - but this time I left it out of sight..........then out of mind.

    Have a great weekend everyone......

This totally depends on the design of the battery charger. Most good chargers will stop the charge after the battery is fully charged. You can look on IC makers data sheets and app. notes and read all about it. But if its a cheapee the battery life and capacity can be affected.

Thanks. It's the Canon charger and battery - probably one of the better ones (at least one of the more expensive.

    Batteries come with instructions? ;)

I have never in my life read the instructions, I always leave my batteries charge overnight (I have the Canon 300D, I doubt they've changed the battery style), and have had no problems whatsoever with them for the three years I've had them. In fact, I've had my batteries longer than that, because my Canon video cam uses the same style.

Never a problem whatsoever. Battery life is just fine. I'm guessing you "shouldn't leave it overnight" in the unlikely event of an electrical fire.

Instructions - come when you buy a battery pack - charger and battery - not the one included with the camera (same one, but bought separately).

    Thanks Kelly.

Hey Liz nothing to worry about, I forgot about mine once also for two days. The only thing that I would recommend is to let it cool down for a while before you try to use it. Mine is still working fine with no problems. With it being a Canon, the best , you shouldn't have anything too worry about.

If the battery is still HOT after being on the charger for two days, One the the charger is bad or a cheapie or one cell in the battery is shorted. If the battery is left on the charge for a long time the charger should switch from a fast charge to a trickle charge and the battery will cool down. My Sony VCR charger, Nikkon charger, and the old digital charger for the AA batteries all go to trickle charge once the battery is charged.

Yes you do need to let the batteries cool down before use. If you use it before it cools down you could shorten the life of the battery.

I wouldn't worry too much. It happens here at the office all the time between the D60, two 10D's. Assistants will put two batteries on the charger Friday afternoon, and it will stay there until Monday or Tuesday when I notice that no one is paying attention to the charger. Haven't had any batteries go south in the last 2-3 years yet, and we use both Canon and aftermarket brand BP-511's.

Now that's the most encouraging word I've heard! ;)

    Thanks Leon.
