    D70s Image Size Problems

While I was getting ready to choose a picture to blow up from my Nikon D70s camera(pictures shot in NEF format) I noticed that it(Adobe Photoshop CS2) said that my picture, at 100% was only 8x12 inches!! While pictures that were taken with my Konica Minolta in Jpeg form were 22x16! So whats up? Is CS2 reading it wrong or do I have something messed up with my camera? I am off to read the manual now to see if I can find an answer but as of now have none.......if anyone can help it would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Okay, I found in Picture Project(program that came with my camera) that it says my images are 3008x2000 and 5.87Mbyte
But yet, at 100% they are still not very clear(not as clear as the Minolta)....... any ideas?

Look at the number of pixels per inch

The image which comes out of your D70s is about 2000x3000 pixels. Give it a pixel density of 250 pixels/inch and this comes out to 8x12 inches. 250 pixels/inch is just fine for printing.

Now change the pixels density to 125 pixels/inch (without resampling) and you get 22x16 inches. Same image, just a question of pixel density in the print.

If you want the images to look sharper (clearer) then change the sharpness setting when you do the conversion from RAW. I know how to do it in Nikon Capture but I never use Picture Project.

How do I make it so that I can get bigger pictures and still have great quality? I am wanting to blow these up for people to hang on their walls......

You can definately get nice 16x20 or 16x24 (full frame) prints from a 6mp DSLR. Mathematically, a lot of people will say that you need 300dpi to make a good print but I don't believe that from experience of printing. Try 180 or 240 or anything else and I'm sure you'll be surprised how good the print is. Actually it would work out to 125dpi unless you upsized your file - and I might do that to get a 180dpi print.

I prefer to set the sharpening later (as others do too) for optimizing the sharpness to both the image and the size of print that will be made. Sharpening should be the last thing that you do in Photoshop. Takes more time to do it this way, but the quality is higher - important in a print of that size, but I wouldn't spend this kind of time on proofs.
