Macro or Micro Photography is taking a photograph of a small item, your Match Box car.

Inserting a real back ground for printing has been done before computers was darkroom artistry, but now days it's PhotoShop, PaintShop, or Gimp artistry, also known as Graphic Arts.

Re: What is the correct name........

I support freygr's definition ... although I have refined freygr's modern term to that used by Sir John Federick William Herschal ... micrography.

Sir John Hershal coined most of the words and terms that we still use in photography. He gave photography a common nomenclature.

There are several definitions of micrography. One definition is to do with ancient Greek and Hebrew scipts, another is to do with microscopy and the way I've used micrography is ... to make a small object appear large.

As a side note; 'macro photography' is a relatively recent term. The original word was macroscopy (not to be confused with macrography). Macrography is the study of an object with the naked eye.
