It can be done using Photoshop Elements and overlaying the two images. You will probably have to "cut" your father away from the light green background and then ensure that he is properly aligned so that when the two images are overlayed - him alone and the family - that he is in the right place to be overlaid properly. I have not done much of this, so I know what needs to be done, but I cannot teach you exactly how to do it.

If you tell us what software you have, then maybe someone can tell you if it will do it or not. Also, think about posting them somewhere and maybe someone will help you do what you want. HTH.

    Cheers,

In PS - you need to make sure that both images are the same resolution - are these photos you need to scan or digitial images? Regardless, in PS go to Image > Image Size and check the Resolution - if they are different, reduce the larger to equal the smaller.

In the family pic, add a layer - drag it below the original layer - you are going to move \ copy\paste the image of your dad onto that layer.

Pic of your dad - extracting him - there are a few different ways - 1 quick and dirty way is to use the magnetic lasso tool to follow his outline - you can then do Select > Modify > Expand - choose 1 or two pixels - what that does is expand your selection outwards which will grab some pixels of the background on the edges but you get all your dad - you can refine the selection painting with black or white in Quick Mask mode - you can then do Select > Inverse to select everything other than your dad then delete the background - then copy\paste your dad to the new layer of the other pic.

Another option is to use the Magic Wand - in the options bar make sure to select Add To Selection, Anti-aliased and Contiguous - experiment with the tolerance - try 15 to start with, and vary if needed - the wand makes a selection of the background which you can then delete.

If you have access to a graphics tablet with a pen, use the pen to make a more accurate freehand selection than either of the above.

I can't quite remember how to do this - but the best method is to use the Channels palette to make a selection. make a duplicate photo - usually the blue channel is the best - deselect the red and green channel - here's where my memory fails me - I think you try to isolate the elements of the pic by using Image > Brightness\Contrast and blow the image out - idea being that a magnetic lasso can find the edges better, or the magic wand can make a more accurate selection.

There's an even better method - but I'd have to check my notes for that. Here's a quick & dirty pic I did of myself for various profile pics I use in Facebook or where ever - I took a self-portrait in front of a wood door - looked stupid - so I deleted the background and slid in a killer sunset pic that I took along Avalon Bay, NJ - it's looks pretty good, although when you examine my outline you can see the flaws - and like I said, it was a quick-and-dirty selection - I did not take my time to try and get a more accurate selection.

BTW, how come I can't insert\paste an image, but have to link to it?

    Jim
