Histogram Question

My camera (Rebel XTi) has the option to view the histogram in either RGB mode or for Brightness. What are the advantages/disadvantages for using either of these modes? Which one do you use most often? Thanks for your input.

I have that option with my Fuji S2 as well, but rarely look at anything other than Master (which is probably the same as your Brightness). Individual color channels may be blown out, but to fix that you'd have to either underexpose or change lighting. Some times neither is possible or at least a good option...

The brightness selection is fine for in-camera evaluation. Channels are good for working in PhotoShop, but for most people, it's really not advantageous to use it in the camera.

That depends on the body, some newer (Ok, at the moment Pro bodies) cameras are beginning to add a color temp setting that you can adjust the individual colors which really makes it an easy task if you are too low or to high in a particular color in the histogram. It won't be long long before this hits lower end units as well.

It's just another tool. It can be interpreted just like a brightness histogram, but gives you additional info. For example, it might tell you that you are totally blowing out red. If you're shooting roses, that might matter to you, and you might miss it in the brightness histogram.

If I had the option to use it, it'd be on all the time. You have to remember, any histogram is only as valuable as you make it.

JS, haven't the Nikon DSLR's done this? At least what I'm thinking of, which is selecting a color temperature (number, like 5000K) from a setup menu? I suppose from there if the reds are being blown you could raise the CCT so you don't blow it at time of capture, then bring the WB back down with your RAW converter? Or do I have this all wrong...? Sounds interesting!

No, this allows you to change the white balance of specific colors, specifically B(lue) A(mber) M(agenta) G(reen). This allows a whole lot more color control than the standard WB.
