    camera settings

    Hello,
I just upgraded from Olympus E-520 to E-3, is there anything i should know about the settings of this one?
I'm using currently one lense (from my E-520), the 40-150mm/f4.0-5.6.
At the E- 520 i customized most of the settings, should i try it with E-3 or the defaults are ok? I'm interested more about the NR/NF in high ISO.

    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

    Re: camera settings

I don't know a whole lot about Olys, so I can't answer a question about specific settings. I have used a lot of Canon cameras over the years, and I just experiment a bit to find the settings. I also shoot RAW so I ignore most of the "picture styles" stuff in the cameras. I just take my RAW file and make it look the way I want it to in post processing.

I also shoot RAW, but i was interested more about the Noise Reduction & Noise Filter between the two cams in high ISO, since E-3 is more Pro than E-520 even if they share the same sensor. Picture styles are more for point&shoot, so i also ignore them (E-3 doesn't have any i think).
Is there anyone with both cams to help a little?

    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

    Re: camera settings

In simplest terms, noise is a function of two things: The pixel density of the sensor, and the in camera processing. Since you are shooting RAW you are bypassing the in camera processing(or should be, DPreview suggest that Oly may be applying some NR even in RAW).

That leaves you with pixel density, and the E-3 and the E-520 are virtually the same at just over 4MP/cm squared. The E-520 actually comes out just slightly ahead, with slightly less pixel density. I don't want to promote another site but it would be a good idea to read the reviews of both bodies at DP review, they get quite in depth with their reviews and have quite a bit of noise data.

    Re: camera settings

    Hey,

Update the camera firmware to 1.4. I wasn't very impressed with past firmware updates, but this one makes it a whole new beast. AF is FAST. Very fast. Even in center point only/sensitivity small.

My usual settings are NF/NR both to OFF, shoot in RAW + small JPG.

I'd rather mess with the noise myself in post processing. If you keep the ISO below 800, you won't even worry about noise. Above 800 and I'm usually more worried about good saturation and dynamic range. How much shooting do you do above ISO800?

    Re: camera settings

Thanks, i only go above ISO800 (up to 1600) in about 10-20% of the shoots, took some samples and saw that with NR OFF and NF LOW had the best results so i'll keep these settings as defaults. I also updated the firmware the same day i bought the E-3 (had v1.0 out of the box).
Generaly i shoot RAW + Large SF JPG - not crazy, but when out in the field JPG is the best option if you want to see the result in any computer, later in home i do some PP in the RAW if needed.

I also saw that both E-520 and E-3 apply some NR in RAW, so that was the reason i was asking but thanks anyway.

    Again, thank you all,
    Chris.

Sounds like you have things under control. I like having the JPG to sift through the shots faster on my aging pc - anything I like I can then edit from RAW.

I don't think that any of the Oly cameras apply NR in RAW - everything I have read just says that oly has a stronger AA filter than it needs. That's a lot different than software manipulation.
