flash question

I have the Canon Speedlite 420 EX. I woke up this morning to find my son asleep on the flash. It somehow got disconnected from the camera. The connection to the camera looks okay, but the little red plastic thing that covers what I think are the bulbs fell off. The bulbs look funny to me . One is oriented vertically and one is horizontal. Maybe this is the way they always look. Does anyone know? And I can't get the red plastic thing to stay on the flash. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? Thanks for any advice.

Sorry I can't help you with your question because I don't use that equipment. If you could post a picture of what you're describing, it might help other people see what's going on.

Sounds like the red plastic cover for the autofocus illuminator is broken?
