Filter Step Up/Down Rings

I've noticed a few posts here about these things so I thought I'd share what I use.

One set of seven rings will cover from 49mm all the way up to 77mm. They can be a bit expensive if you buy them separately.


Perhaps not something I should do here, but if you contact my buddy Jason at my local pro-camera shop (web site and phone number here) and mention this thread, he can sell you these kits for only $36/each (normally $56). He has both the step ups and step downs - don't know how many he has in stock though.

i'd also say that you need to be careful with them, on my old manual focus lenses i used a step up and it got slightly bent, and was almost impossible to use. they are fairly cheap but why throw money away.

Pretty good deal - I think I've spent that much on the two or three I have. Advantage here is that a lot of different sizes are covered, but if you only need 52-77 and 72-77 (what I usually have), then life might be easier with just those two rings.

You're right about that. These metal rings are simply filters without the glass - making them easy to get out-of-round. And it should be mentioned that even using one ring introduces two additional thread connections so care is needed to make sure that the rings and filter(s) are only gently tightened.


I haven't tried it, but I suppose if you're using something like, say a 50mm lens, and didn't want to carry these rings in your case or pocket, you could make a quick lens hood out of them (and not use a filter at all).
