Dark spot on Photos
Canon SD870IS
I get a dark spot in the upper right corner in photos taken using the telephoto. No spot unless telephoto is used.
What is the problem?

Re: Dark spot on Photos
Hi logan, welcome to PR :) Do you have an example you could post for us?

Re: Dark spot on Photos
Is it the same lens? that you always see the spot? or do you see it when you use different lenses?
-
Re: Dark spot on Photos
Since he hasn't replied yet.... I'm having the same problem. I actually googled this and this thread came up. Here's a sample:

the rest of the spots are on my car itself. I needed a shot of something one solid color to show the spot ;)

Re: Dark spot on Photos
also, it's not on any of the lenses. when I look through the viewfinder, it doesn't show. It only shows AFTER the picture is taken (on the screen). Please help!

Re: Dark spot on Photos
Looks like dust on the sensor.
If it looks more obvious and sharp when you stop down to f/16 and it almost disappears at f/2 then it's definitely dust on the sensor.
-
Re: Dark spot on Photos
eh.. I'm not sure what f2 is ;/ but my friend looked at it yesterday and said it's probably on the sensor. So how to fix it?
-
Re: Dark spot on Photos
I took mine to a camera store where he opened up the camera, turned it upside down and used a rocket blower.
Never blow into your camera because you will cause condensation to enter from your breath.
Take it to the camera store and get them to show you how to do it properly.

Re: Dark spot on Photos
thank you! I'll update as soon as I take it in

Re: Dark spot on Photos
There are several 'how to clean sensor' threads in the 'help' forums. Can be done by yourself but may be good idea to have it done at a shop first to see how it is done.

Re: Dark spot on Photos
If you are comfortable handling your camera... this is my favorite camera sensor cleaning site/ products... they have great totorials how to clean, and how to shoot the pictures which will show you dirty sensor... I shoot horse shows so I have to clean my own sensor... or I would nEVER have my camera back from the shop...lol...

Re: Dark spot on Photos
I think the black spot is due to dust partical. Art pictures commission portrait and prints play an important role in home decorating for several reasons. They do not only reflect and put your own personality into the room, but they can also help as a solution to change the look and feel of a room by giving the illusion of height, width and length

Re: Dark spot on Photos
Hello folks,
Found this site and this thread by searching for solution on my less than a yr old Sony A300 camera. Recently I'd notice a right top and bottom black corner spots when I took pictures with zoom out to max, does not happen when I zoom back in a bit.
Any solution for this, TIA.

Re: Dark spot on Photos
Kit lens? If not, what lens? Is the image different than the viewfinder? Do you have filter(s) or non-stock hood on the front of the lens? Does your SSS indicator flash all the time (lower right in viewfinder)? - TF

Re: Dark spot on Photos
Looks like vignetting but shouldn't happen when zoomed out. Should only happen at widest angle.
-
Re: Dark spot on Photos
I use kit lens.
Same in the viewfinder that’s how I found out and zoom in a bit to have normal images.
I have the polarizing filter when took these pictures, did not try without it yet.
I believed the SSS bar only jumps up and down at the LCD not viewfinder, I can double check it tonight.

Re: Dark spot on Photos
ok, with the Sunpak 55mm circular polarizer off from the camera I don't see any black spots on the right top and bottom corners. Should I buy a different filter? if so recommedation on brands.

Re: Dark spot on Photos
If you were zoomed all the way out ( aka the widest angle) do you know what the length of the lens would be? is it a 18mm or what?
depending how low that number is, no filter will fit on with out vingetting, its just a fact of life.
-
Re: Dark spot on Photos
I am using the lense that comes with the camera 3.5-5.6/18-70 Sony.
-
Re: Dark spot on Photos
You started by saying that it only happens when you, "zoom out to max" which, to me, would be 70mm. You meam at 18mm, correct?
As was said, any filter will show up at 18mm on this lens. You will just have to frame a little larger and crop it off.
My concern is why it is uneven. It should show the same amount of vignetting in all four corners unless the sensor is not centered. Did you check to see if the SSS indicator is flashing?

Re: Dark spot on Photos
Yes at 18mm.
From viewfinder the SSS flashes all the times until I zoomed to near or at 18mm.
From liveview it seems to flashes all the times no matter at 18 or to 70.
TIA.

Re: Dark spot on Photos
I taking a stab that your using filters which fit into a holder (Cokin) and the holder in one is square and the other its at an angle, so only affecting one corner. It happened to me a long time ago on a film camera and took me a while to figure out what was happening.
I was rotating the polariser and the holder rotated with it.

Re: Dark spot on Photos
I think that we’re getting somewhere.
Just removed the filter to check for square or angles from the filter or on Sony lens but could not see any, but I did making sure that the filter screws in while the camera lens not rotating with it and now the SSS stop flashing at 34mm on both Viewfinder and Liveview. But the right dark corners are still there at 18mm but less, I can use it at 19mm.
Should I worry about not centered ?.

Re: Dark spot on Photos
If the SSS indicator in the viewfinder flashes all the time (not the little bars going up/down, but flashes) - even when SSS is turned off - it means that it is broke. When it dies, the sensor stops at some point in the movememnt and may be off center. This would explain why only the two corners are dark. - TF

Re: Dark spot on Photos
Then again, here is a shot with my A350 at 16mm. These aren't even either and if it was 18mm, it might only show in two corners. - TF

Just turn the camera back on and the SSS is flashing all the times.....I never did notice it until now, always thought that my hands shakes too much :)
Any recomendation on fixing it or replace it with something else. TIA.

My A700 (2nd body) is at TeleplanCameraRepair right now for the same reason - only my viewfinder was waaay off. It's going to cost about $200. I'll report back when I receive it.
If you can live without Live View, I think the A700, at about $800, is a steal. If I was looking as <$500, it would be another A300/350.

Re: Dark spot on Photos
Nope I get that on my canon sensor all the time. I think personally it is a flaw in the sensor, since I sent it in and spent a ton of money having them clean it. Never again. I will clean it myself or shoot it through the fracking lens. I still get that on sky shots all the time. I have to clone it out if I care. Really annoys me. It is one of the reasons I am moving away from the rebel body I have. I can't afford a new body, so I guess I will just have to figure out how to live with it.

Re: Dark spot on Photos
Hi
I am new to this forum and photography using DSLR. I am using canon 1100D, 18-55mm lens with f5.6. I am having a similar problem of black spots in my images. The black spots appear when the shutter speed is low less than 1/30. is this the same problem that there is some dust on my sensor. please guide me how can this issue be resolved
-
Re: Dark spot on Photos
There are all kinds of videos on YouTube on how to clean a sensor. In reality you will be cleaning the filter in front of the sensor as there generally a filter on top of the sensor.
If you are having dust spot issues they should show up across the shutter range. Posting a picture or two should help us figure out what you got going on. The knowledge base here is pretty deep. You came to the right place.

Re: Dark spot on Photos
I would like to add that dust spots can show up on some pictures and not on others. The smaller the f stop opening you use the more they will show up and if you use larger openings like F2.8 or even 5.6 you may not even see them. A good and easy way to check to see if you really have some is to set your f stop at a setting such as F 22 and point your camera toward a nice blue sky and and take a picture, then look at that image on your computer screen. If you do have spots be sure and try a dry cleaning of just blowing them off with a rocket blower or something similar first BEFORE you try a wet cleaning.
