Is my D70 screwed up, or am I going crazy??

The exposure compensation indicator is constantly flashing on the control panel of my D70, and I'm convinced it's not supposed to. Am I going nuts or what? I just got back from D.C. and the analog exposure display in the viewfinder was all over the place. I was trying to shoot manual, but in a couple of instances had to shoot in automatic.

To preface the above, I didn't use the camera all winter, so the compensation indicator flashing may be a normal thing, and I just forgot about it.

On another note, I've got a 256 MB card that all of a sudden will not work. My 1 GB card works ok, but everytime I try to use the 256 MB card I get the 'CHA' message.......THIS CARD CANNOT BE USED.

Anyone got any help/advise for me?

    Thanks,
    John

Are the camera exposures all over the place? Sounds like something on the main circuit board is acting up

    Thanks Jorge.........

In some cases the exposures did seem a little high or low when I dialed one or two stops. The skies I was shooting under were either overcast or bright. I don't remember ever having that much of a problem adjusting before. I think what I might do is pay a visit to the camera shop where I bought it, and see what they say.

Go to the Nikon web site. There was a recall on the D-70 and I had problems with the CHA message and it not seeing the memory card and Nikon fixed it and I did not have pay anything very good service.

Do you have a bent pin? It might sound irrelevant but a bent pin causes the circuitboard to do really weird things. I had a friend's D80 display the wrong ISO and it wouldn't change. Fixing the bent pin fixed it. If that's not it send it in for service.

fx....looked closely (with the help of a flashlight), and didn't see any apparent bending of any pins, but then again they're pretty small, and my eyesight ain't what it use to be!

Yeah you'll see them pretty well if there are any bent. Misaligned ones stand out quite a bit so they are probably ok. I'd say send it in for service. The service bill should be well under $250.

Re: Is my D70 screwed up, or am I going crazy??

What an idiot I am. I contacted Nikon support, filled out the service advisory return form, and this morning sent the body in via UPS. Tonight I get a reply from Nikon support telling me that it's probably the card, since the two 1 GB cards I tried before were ok, and the exposure compensation flashing is normal.
    Oy!
I told em to just send it back when they recieve it. There goes $7.20 shipping and at least a week of my time.:mad2: :mad2:

At least it's only $7.20 . I sent my D80 in when it wasn't metering right (blowing out highlights) but then they told me that's what it was supposed to do--Doh! That's when I learned to use the exposure comp dial . Did they tell you how to turn the flashing off?

Nope, didn't say how to turn it off. I'm led to believe that you can't if the camera is in M.
Ahhh well.....live & learn. Lesson one: NEVER send in the camera without getting the reply from support first!

I can turn the flashing off on the D80 with the selection button...the one with the arrows that go different directions.

Re: Is my D70 screwed up, or am I going crazy??

I just got an email from Nikon. They want $225 to repair it. Since the problem was with just the one card, I'll use the other cards I have. I took 300+ pictures in D.C. with a 1 GB card and it worked fine. Apparantly this is not falling under the service advisory they sent out.
