    card reader problems
This weekend I had 67 shots on my CF card to download. I started to download them and everything was going fine, until it hit #33. Then everything just stopped. The green light on the card reader went out and that was it. The whole PC was locked up. I restared and did the whole thing over again with the same results. I was downloading using the Zoom Browser EX program that came with the DRebel. I was eventually able to get the rest of my files transfered to my PC using the File Utility Veiwer program tha also came with the camera. I took a few pictures tonight and as soon as the CF card touches the contacts in the reader, it locks everthing up. I haven't tried downloading from the camera yet, that is my next step but I'm dreading the slow transfer time. So what is causing this to happen? Is it the card, or the reader or something within the PC? Everything on the PC seems to be operating as usual with the exeption of the problems that I just described. The CF card is a Kingston 1gb card. Not the top of the line, but has been pretty good so far and it has only seen a little over 2000 images so I don't expect the card to be the problem. The reader is a fairly cheap, Digicom, that came with the camera package that I bought. So what do you think is the problem?

Check the pins in the reader aren't bent or broken off. Check the Compact Flash Card holes and make sure that there isn't a broken pin in one of the holes. Other than that, either a faulty card or reader.

Both card and reader look fine. Nothing missing, nothing bent... I was able to download the pictures from the camera without an trouble, which leads me to believe that the reader is the problem. Looks like I just added a new card reader to my Christmas list.

I usually just drag the files using Windows Explorer. The card reader appears as a drive on the computer. What operating system are you using? My home computer has Windows 98 and needs drivers for card readers. Is the reader connected by USB? If it needs a driver, you might try downloading a new one and reinstalling that. Has the card been reformatted?

Hey Chunk. I'm running windows 98 myself and I'm going to try to reinstal the driver that came with the reader tonight to see if that helps. I can't use the Windows Explorer method because everything locks up as soon as the card hits the pins in the reader. There is a green light on the reader that shows that it is ready to use, but as soon as the card touches the pins, it goes out, and locks everthing up. The reader is connectes with USB also, and I alwasy reformat the card after I have the files saved on my PC.

I didn't find the digicom website. If they have a driver somewhere online, I'd try downloading a new one.

Good idea Chunk. The web site is www.digicomdigital.com and there is a driver available for download. I know what I will be doing this afternoon. :)
