What do the prints look like?

    Hi
I am always amazed how great everyone's pics look like on screen, but how do they really look like when they are printed?
    Thanks

    Great! At least mine do...

High quality digital printing can be a learning curve, but I'm always amazed by large prints from my 6mp DSLR.

Printing resolution is higher than what you see on the screen, though. For example, if you have a 17" monitor and it's set to 1024x768 resolution, an image that's 400x600 will be somewhere around 4x6 on the screen. To actually make a 4x6 print, you'd really want to use about 1200x1800 pixels so it's 300 pixels per inch. Bigger prints usually work fine at a lower resolution, and there are ways of going bigger yet.

The bigger the print, the more problems you can have with all sorts of things - just like darkroom prints from film!

    Great as well!

When posting online, things are way sized down, but when printing, I use a much larger file.

plus, unless you are hand printing, odds are you are getting a digital print anyway.

At least as good. Better if you print on Mpix's metallic paper No, that was not a shameless plug for Mpix. Their metallic paper prints (essentially reversal paper for printing from slides) really are awesome.

I love my digital prints! I too use Mpix, and love the prints I get from them. I have used the metallic paper and I like the results, but it's not something I would use to print everything on.

    Much better, as they should...

Hmmm, this may not be obvious to those raised in the digital age, but in the medium of art and commercial photography, the print (or published page) is still king.

Truth is, it's the image that's represented on a computer monitor or the web that's the big compromise in quality.

If your prints don't look better than your monitor screen, you're doing something wrong somewhere...
