I currently own a Minolta X-700 looking into buying a lens converter - extender not really sure?? What should I be looking for at in a converter?

Can, one be had for around $100 and under. Like I said I have no clue!! I'm thinking about maybe going with a 2X to use with my Vivitar 80-200MM 1:4.5 MC Zoom.

Teleconverters will change the focal length of the lens you have by whatever multiplier the converter is. A 2x converter with an 80-200 lens will give you 160-400.

This isn't without tradeoffs though: A 2x converter will lose two stops of light. Since it's an f4.5 lens, that works out to about f9 or f10 as a maximum aperture, so the viewfinder will be noticably darker. If this is an autofocus camera, you will probably have problems with autofocusing because most AF systems need f5.6 or faster to work properly. Also, you'll lose some sharpness - especially with zoom lenses. Some of the latest high-end 80-200 f2.8 lenses have dedicated teleconverters (they're expensive, too) designed specifically for those lenses and work pretty well from what I've seen, but in general the results won't be as good as without a converter. They can range in different price levels, and you should be able to find one for under $100.
