    Question Card reader failure (?)

Not sure if this is the right place to post this...but...

The last time I booted up my computer, I got a message that there was a "Keyboard failure". I checked all the connections, but it would not go away, so I started unplugging some of my USB devices and rebooting. When I unplugged my memory card reader for my CF cards, lo and behold, everything functioned correctly. When I plugged the card reader back in I got a message about an unknown USB device - could not find the drivers...and yet Lexar's web site says it does not need a driver for Windows XP. So I guess, the obvious question is whether or not there is some way to make this work or is the card reader "toast" and I need to replace it. Any insight that anyone can provide is greatly welcomed. Thanks.

At that point, I'd say replace the card reader. I'm sure you'd spend more of your valuable time than the cost of a new reader, and when it does not recognize it the device, chances are very good no drivers are going to help, especially since it used to work!

Rocket Scientist...thanks for the reply. I tend to agree with you, the old one is "toast", particularly since it used to work.

Did you try another USB port or try another cable with it?

Chances are it's the card reader, but it may be good to eliminate the other two options before you toss it.

I'd take a known working device and test that port and cable, just in case there is some sort of short that could do serious damage to a device or your system.

Card Readers are cheap, unless you purchase one from some stores. Best bet order a new one.

    Second that, very cheap.

But I stress again, test that port and cable with a known working device (preferably a cheap device in case it is the cable or port and it could damage the device). If you have a cheap mouse, I'd try it in that port.

I don't think its likely, but remember USB's are generally a powered port. If its a short in the port that caused the problem/damaged the reader, it would be best to find out before you put something like a portable harddrive or such into it and have that device fried.

Cara, I did test the reader with another port and got the same result. Didn't test with another cable...hmmm not sure that I have another one where both ends are the same as the readers cable. I have one where both ends are USB, but the end of the cable that goes into the reader is quite small and, I suspect, unique to this brand and model. Thanks for your insight. I ordered another one this afternoon and will pick it up tomorrow.

    Cheers,
