Superimposing Text?

First post! Is there any easy way to interface with the typical digital camera so that I could superimpose text or other simple graphics onto the video being recorded in real time?

Other than some very basic things, such as date and time, I can't think of any production camcorders that allow you to add graphics in real time. I will typically capture to a laptop or external drive on site so that I can eliminate capture time and build the graphics and titles either during a break in the action or right after the event. That helps speed up the turn around of the final edit making it ready for reproduction and distribution.

pre digital you could get some cheap titleing devices that would do it (although they were designed to work when copying a pre recorded signal to a vcr, but these days without spending up big there is nothing you can do.

My late father in law's old Sony palm camera could do that.
There was a text overlay feature that was rather cumbersome to set up but would handle simple titles.
Only 8mm tape though, not digital.
