    hi cp.
yeah, u got a common problem with your camera.
i have an NV-GS70 1.7mp and the NV-GS400 4.0mp and no probs with either thank god.
the PV-GS400 is the usa ntsc version of this camera.
the new GS400 that was released in july 2004 is known for tape transport problems, ranging from the transfer noise u mention thru to transport lockup and a few other issues.
it appears to be on happening in the GS400 model that ive heard of, but its not common place.
how long have u had your camera, if under 12 mths, take it to your local panasonic repair agent for a check. if u got it from ebay or an online store, id kiss the warranty goodbye, as u have to return the camera to the place of purchase at your cost, if it cant be replaced or fixed under warrany, u have to pay for postage back to you as well.
this camera is a brilliant camera otherwise, beats the hell out of its competitors in its class, but yes, tape transport problems do exist.
i also have the previous version of the GS400, which was the brilliant MX-500 3.2mp model. great camera but no firewire capture, only usb.

get your gs400 checked out if u still have warranty left......GLEN
