Newbie question: can you share lens on a Nikon D40X and a Canon XTI?

I am thinking to get the Canon XTi and my friend wants to get the Nikon D40x. I know these two cameras are very similar. If we get lens for my cameras, can we share these? Or are they restricted due to the brand?

    Thanks!

    Craig-
All of the camera makers have proprietary lens mounts. The exception is Olympus, Panasonic, and Leica, who share the Four Thirds mount. But you and your friend will not be able to share lenses between Nikon and Canon bodies. It would be cool if you could share lenses, though. So why don't you try to agree on a system?
