    Ewe,
Just so that I can figure out how much money I need to save, what would your top 2 recommendations be for a multi-purpose lens for a Rebel (I'm not sure this is a fair/proper question)? I just purchase a rebel as well, so consider me a newbie when it comes to this stuff.
    Thanksf or your insight.

Grab the Tamron 28-300 XR, I have it and I use it for 90% of my shots.

    Me neither :-)

    1. I have top Canon lenses

    2. very much depends

    - the 70-200 f/4 is a great lens
    - the 28-135mm IS is not a top lens but may make a complete set for a one lens travel set
    - the 17-40mm is ok if you like more wide angle
    - 100mm Macro

You also can trick some lens softness with good sharpening. The danger is to look at images from sharper lenses.

Good news: because the Rebel uses only a center crop the corner fall-off does not matter that much.
