Question info about IR with digital slr

I have a Fuji FinePix S2Pro and I am interested in doing some infra red phototgraphy. I did a test by viewing a TV remote through the lens with iso 100. I did not see any image. Do I need an IR lens? and what one is best?

DSLRs use an IR filter over the sensor. To get IR, people have modified the camera by removing this filter. I personally would not want to play with sensor like that! Of course, to take normal photographs, you'll have to modify it back again. Some people try using an IR filter to catch the little that comes through with mosty disappointing results from the few examples I've seen.

You will not need a special lens. The reason you did not see anything from your remote control is because that test is meant to test if your sensor is sensitive to infrared (or near infrared). Since you did not actually take a picture, your sensor wasn’t involved at all. By not seeing anything through the viewfinder, you have successfully established that your eye is not sensitive to infrared.

You will need a Hoya R72 filter and, generally, 4 extra stops of exposure, either a high ISO or a good tripod (or both), as well as patience and experimentation with exposure.

On a related note I was reading a magazine about this a few weeks ago. The author said in his opinion the best digital out there for shooting IR is the Minolta Dimage 7 with the R72 filter. I happened to have a Dimage 7 laying around in a drawer so I bought the R72. I am well pleased with the results and will post as soon as I shoot something other than the trees in my back yard.
