Which one to buy Nikon D40X or Panasonic DMC-FZ50

I have thought of buying an slr camera... One of my friend have suggested Nikon's D40X and Panasonic DMC-FZ50.. Out of these two which one will be better??? Though price is a great factor...

It would be very kind if someone can suggest any other better camera...

The Panasonic is not an SLR. It is a Bridge camera :

- In a SLR you view the image coming through the lens via a mirror, which flips out of the way when you take the shot. The LCD screen on the back only shows the image when it has been taken. The sensor is large and captures a lot of light so performance in low light is good. Specialised elements measure light and detect focus so generally the camera reacts quickly and gets things right. The camera is part of a system of interchangeable lenses, add-on flash units etc. which is a long-term investment - from time to time you upgrade your body but keep your acessories.

- In a Bridge camera the "viewfinder" shows you a LCD screen (like the one on the back of the camera). The image is continuous and you can shoot videos with the camera. The sensor is small does not capture a lot of light so low-light shooting is a problem. The zoom lens is not interchangable - on the Panasonic it goes from a moderate wide-angle to long telephoto but at the telephoto end there's not much light getting through (f11) but Panasonic have included an image stabiliser which helps to minimise camera shake.

Both are 10Mpix cameras but in reality they are quite different things. I suggest that you read up on the basics before making a decision.
