The D50 feels more robust, and 350D feels like a toy. IF you have small hands, the 350D might actually be a better camera for you. Drawback is 6 megapixels for the nikon versus the 8 of the 350D. image quality is pretty much a draw. Cost is a little less for the D50. My suggestion is go and play with both. Bring an SD and CF card to the store, and your laptop if you have one. Compare the two side by side if the sales person will let you (the smaller pro shops will let you), take pictures with similar lenses (50mm f1.8 is a good comparison lense).
    Have fun :-)

    Hey!

This is a link to a website which has a lot of tests for cameras as well as comparisons with other models! I follow their recommendations because I was able to translate their reviews into my likes and dislikes, in any case the tests they do, provide you with an insight as to what you might want!

Personally, i hold a preference to the canon, but my opinion is pretty much based on emotions so if you care about it then here goes:

    Hope this helps!

6mp versus 8mp is practically no difference. The key for you will be determining which fits your style better. The suggestions to try them both out are about as good as you can get. The D50 has stellar image quality and is compatible with Nikon's line of lenses and flashes, including the i-TTL flash system, which has a reputation for excellence. The D50 is currently pretty inexpensive....I rather like it myself. Nikon's consumer line of lenses has quite a few options for you: the 18-55mm kit lens ( on par or better than the canon version which has a bad reputation), the 18-70mm DX lens, which has great quality, and the 18-200mm VR lens, which has good quality over a very long range and has other features like VR as well, though it is hard to find online.

Both systems are quite nice though, and if I were a beginner today I would make my choice based on feel. And unless your hands are really small or your brain somehow meshes better with the canon's 'controls' ;), I think the d50 has an advantage.

Re: Not Sure Where 2 Post

As other people have mentioned, fit is important. And so is personal bias. Some people just prefer one brand over another and will regret a purchase because of that. That's a valid factor to consider. Personally, I think fit and the system are the most important things to think about. Look at the lenses and accessories and see if one system seems to offer options that fit your needs better. As far as which camera is actually better, I think they're pretty comparable. While I don't worry much about pixel-count, 8 megapixels is 33% more than 6. And that means more room to crop and a little bit more breathing room with ISO settings since any noise will be effectively reduced by the larger image size.

And just in case you haven't looked, we have professional reviews for both cameras here:

    Nikon D50 Pro Review >>

And there's also a digital SLR guide in the Learn section. It might point out some more things you should consider when looking at these two cameras:

I don't think you can go wrong with either one. It's not a matter of life or death. I am confident you'll be happy whichever camera you decide to buy.

8mp versus 6mp sounds like a lot...but remember that when you look at it by horizontal/vertical, its a difference of 3504x2336 (or thereabouts) versus 3008x2000. Not a whole lot.

And the D50 is great at high ISO
