    Mirror slap and other vibrations...

Here is a video demonstrating the vibrations from an SLR (Canon 7D).

    http://vimeo.com/22878525

    My observations:

•Hand held completely covers everything else (except the shutter finger).

•Shutter only isn't much (if any) different than with the mirror slap. (Considering that shutter 'open' and 'close' seem to be two separate actions in the last one.)

That's not "hand held" that's "mounted on a sturdy tripod and just a finger on the shutter release to set off the exposure". It looks awful. The vibration due to the mirror coming up and down is small by comparison.

I guess manufacturers have made great progress in reducing vibration in the last few years.

You're right; I read "hand on camera" as "hand held" - my bad. Then I imagine that hand held would be significantly worse than any of these. - Terry

I would expect handheld to be better, there is at least a shock absorber with a hand.

My first SLR was a Yashica FX103 and had no mirror lock up but would almost jump off the tripod it was so bad. I bet compared to some of the old SLRs this is almost nothing.
Some of it also has to do with the lens used as well, weight and length.
I am like Barney Fife, I have a gun but Andy makes me keep the bullet in my pocket..
