I rarely do portraits but when I do my 90mm Tamron works very well. It has a "portrait" perspective although you will have to stand a bit farther away to get the 35mm angle of view.

    Budget......
    I've used the following:

    Canon 50mm/f1.8 - $75
    50mm/f1.4 - $289
    Canon 85mm/1.8 - $325

All of the above are good. I prefer the 85mm - better bokah (background blur) and closer

The 50mm f1.8 II makes a fantastic lens for portraits on the 300D. Because there's a 1.6X magnification due to the small size of the sensor, this makes it an 80mm lens which is great.

The fact that it's a max 1.8 lens, tack-sharp and dirt cheap, you can't go wrong.

I use this lens and I also use a 70-200 f4 L, which is a REALLY nice lens for portraits.
